ひさびさのヤシガニ

最近、めっきり見かけなくなったのがヤシガニ。石垣島に来た当時（１５年前）は、５月～７月の大潮の夜、石垣島の北部へドライブに出掛けると必ず４～５ひき見かけた。ところが、最近はさっぱり。今年６月の満月の日、平久保半島でやっと見つけた。狭い道路で対向車が来たので左に避け車を止めた。すると助手席の子供が溝に大きなカニがいると教えてくれた。明かりを照らすとなんとヤシガニ！子供に「このヤシガニは、ヤドカリの仲間で昔は多くいたけど、今はめずらしい。食べるとおいしいけど、食べる人が多くなってヤシガニが少なくなったから観察だけにしようね。」と話す。自分が見つけたので大満足のこどもは、このヤシガニを２０分間も観察してました。
